Good habits at the start of the week prevent problems later. Before work begins, a few minutes of checking equipment and conditions can stop small issues turning into accidents. Here are seven measures every builder and site supervisor should cover.
- Check PPE condition: gloves without holes, boots with sound soles, helmets without cracks, and clean eye protection.
- Confirm the right PPE for the task: cutting glass, grinding and working at height all need different protection.
- Inspect fall protection: harness webbing, stitching, buckles and connectors, plus the anchor points.
- Walk the site: look for trip hazards, unprotected edges, poor lighting and blocked walkways.
- Review vehicle and crane movement: make sure hi-vis clothing is worn and traffic routes are clear.
- Check first aid and emergency access: know where kits are, and keep exits clear.
- Brief the team: talk through the day's tasks and hazards, and give everyone a chance to raise concerns.
Make it a routine
A short checklist, repeated every shift, becomes second nature. Encourage crews to replace worn equipment straight away instead of waiting for it to fail. Protective gear only helps when it is in good condition and used every time.
