Description
The Wittmann Battenfeld SmartPower 120 is a servo-hydraulic toggle injection moulding machine with 1,200 kN (120 t) clamping force, well suited to visors, face shields and smaller helmet components. Its Drive-on-Demand servo drive activates only when movement or pressure is needed, cutting energy use sharply. It has a compact three-platen construction with wide platens and a swivelling injection unit, available with a servo-hydraulic or servo-electric injection unit. The B8 control with touch screen provides precise process monitoring and repeatability.

Works as expected. Delivery was late by a few weeks and the freight company damaged one guard panel, which was replaced quickly. Cycle time is slightly above what we hoped.

Mould changeover takes around ninety minutes with the quick clamping plates, down from most of a morning. My setup crew was happy about that. The quick clamping plates were an optional extra that added noticeably to the price, though I believe we have earned it back already. We are a family run producer of protective clothing, and the ClearEdge team treated our modest order with proper care.

Machine runs fine, but the initial parameter set was off for our resin and produced sink marks. Took a week of support emails to correct. After that, good. Commissioning started a day later than planned because of a carrier delay, and the engineer made up the time during the week.

Repeatability is the reason we bought it. Shell weight varies by only a small amount across a shift, and our impact test results have been consistent. Our customer runs an annual audit of our shell weights and impact samples, and this year's audit went through without a single query.

Very stable and does what we bought it for. Oil consumption is fine. I wish a few common consumables were listed in the online catalogue with clear prices.

Energy use is lower than our older hydraulic press by a clear margin. The servo pump idles quietly between cycles, and our power bill shows the difference.

We mould visors in polycarbonate and the machine handles the drying and injection profile very well. Clarity is good with few streaks or splay marks.

Three years earlier we bought a cheaper press and regretted it. This one has better rigidity and repeatability, and I sleep better with it on the floor.
